When compared to other Japanese auto manufacturers such as Nissan, Mazda and Honda, it took Mitsubishi a very long time to enter the American car market. It wasn’t until 1971 that a 15% stake of Mitsubishi was sold to the Chrysler Corporation in an effort to expand into foreign markets. But it would take another 11 years to officially enter the North American market, in 1982, at which point the Tredia, Cordia and Starion were introduced. The turning point for Mitsubishi was in 1985 when Mitsubishi and Chrysler formed a pivotal partnership called Diamond Star Motors (DSM). The partnership would go on to produce the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Mitsubishi Galant and Mitsubishi Mirage among others. Of Mitsubishi's line-up of vehicles, the most popular and by far the most successful is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (EVO). The EVO is a high-performance, AWD, turbocharged sedan and has been through 10 iterations leading up to the EVO X. It was originally offered in 1992 in the Japanese, European, and Australian markets, but didn’t show up in the United States until 2003 with the arrival of the EVO VIII, which became the primary competition for the Subaru WRX and WRX STI.
