Mazda Motor Corporation distanced itself from the competition in the 1960's when it decided to manufacture vehicles with Wankel rotary engines, which use rotors instead of pistons, in several of its vehicles. To this day, Mazda remains the only manufacturer of cars that uses the rotary engine design, most prominently in the RX-7 and RX-8 models. The rotary design never took off completely, and following the 1973 Oil Embargo Crisis was forced to sell vehicles with the traditional piston engine design for fuel economy. Some of the more fuel efficient models that Mazda used to compete with the other popular, economy compacts were the Mazda 323 and the Protégé. Mazda always had the desire to market itself as a truly unique company that offered unique and innovate vehicles. One of these vehicles was the Mazda Miata Roadster, a drop-top that handled like a go-cart and was in the financial reach of the average American. They also offered the Mazda 626, the larger and more luxurious version of the 323, which appealed to those looking for more options and more horsepower as it came with an optional V6. Mazda decided to return to the RX-7 in the 1990's as well, providing a great deal of success. Mazda continues that legacy today with the RX-8. But the models that Mazda has come to depend on today are those such as the Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-7, marketed with the Zoom-Zoom tagline that provokes a feeling of an exciting vehicle that needs to be driven.
