Kia is known as South Korea’s oldest car company and was founded in 1944. Kia’s story began just as many Japanese car companies did – manufacturing bicycles. In 1952, Kia transitioned from selling bicycles to selling motorcycles. As Kia expanded, the company finally began designing and selling cars and, in 1973, opened their first automotive assembly plant. In 1986, in an attempt to penetrate the North American automotive market, Kia partnered with Ford Motors and sold Mazda based vehicles in South Korea and abroad. This was the stepping stone Kia needed to eventually sell cars in the United States. It wasn’t until 1992 that Kia finally reached American shores and began selling its niche cars, known for being practical, economical and in the price range of those with low budgets. But Kia’s success was short lived as they declared bankruptcy in 1997, only 5 years after the company’s incorporation. Kia’s rival and number one Korean car manufacturer, Hyundai, bought a 51% stake of the company, but later divested its shares and now owns 40% of Kia. Despite Kia’s setback in the 1990’s, they have been regaining ground ever since and have moved forward with new models and a continued emphasis on practicality. In fact, Kia has rebounded so well that in 2010, the company opened a new manufacturing facility in Georgia, U.S., to compensate for an increase in demand in the United States. Today the company sells a host of popular cars in the states including the Sportage, Spectra and Sephia.
